Over time, any fence loses its original appearance. This happens both naturally over time and as a result of possible damage to the fence. It is clear that I want to change the old fence, to restore the external attractiveness of the suburban area. At the same time, it is quite natural and reasonable to want to reduce the cost of acquiring the material and installing it: to use the old supporting posts for the new fence. However, mounting a new fence on old racks is most often contraindicated. Since the integrity of the structure is violated, which will affect its stability and aesthetic appearance. For example, often on the supporting poles remaining after the fence from the netting net, the owners want to attach a professional sheet, without thinking that they are of insufficient cross-section (diameter) and are not deeply buried in the ground, so they will have to be built up and strengthened, and this will minimize estimated savings. In addition, the old supports do not always stand level and the distance between them does not correspond to what is required, which affects the stability and appearance of the new structure. The fence posts made of corrugated board 2 meters high must be of appropriate parameters (round d = 76 mm. Or square 60x60 mm., Length 3 m. And more) to withstand the necessary snow, wind and other operational loads.

It is possible to install a fence on old poles:

  1. The posts should stand vertically in level and flat in line. Align the supports as needed or reinstall. If the racks of the fence are concreted and stand not evenly and not reliably, then they must be pulled out, beat off concrete, lengthened and only then re-set.
  2. Supporting poles according to their characteristics (section, wall thickness, height, installation method) must correspond to the type of fence and its functions. If they are bent - it is better not to use them.
  3. The used posts should be cleaned of rust, dirt, old paint, foreign elements and repainted.

Any alterations require serious expenses and troubles, since, starting from one, it is necessary to eliminate other identified shortcomings. In addition, it is not always possible to restore the fence posts completely, and it is they that are its foundation. Adaptation of old supports will take a lot of your time, and the result may be disappointing, since, according to our customers, the fence on new poles looks much better. See for yourself in the photos.

Step 1: collect some simple materials

On my / your post pullers, you will need

  • Treated 2 4 ″ x 4 ″ x 10 ′ lumber posts
  • 2 4 ″ x 4 ″ x 1 ′ lumber processed pieces
  • Twenty feet or so, a reserve parachute cord, twine, rope, wire, regardless
  • 1 two-leg iron spike or rebar (located at home improvement centers. I used 3/4 ″ spike diameter)
  • Drill
  • a 3/4 ″ bit (or whatever corresponds to the diameter of your spike)
  • Concrete cinder block or bar scrap, or everything you can find for support.

Step 2: Create Your One Hand Post Puller

What you want to do is to pounce two long 4x4s together, interlacing the two small parts together, as shown in the figure. tie as tight as possible, not a big problem. During use, no rope (paracord) is used. The cord is simply there to hold smaller pieces of timber between the long ones, so that they act as wedges for laying.

Then you want to drill a hole large enough for your Spike (in my case, 3/4 ″) through the end of one of the long 4x4. Then do the same the other way. Measure, if you need, I'm not like I'm quite experienced on the eye / hand. You want the holes to line up so you can click on the spike as shown with little or no resistance.

You are done with a puller! Hard work, huh? Or what? (In case you are a Northern brother or sister).

Marking the fence line and the holes for the posts

Installation of metal poles begins with the marking of the installation line. Before marking clear the area adjacent to the line from foreign objects and vegetation. To mark the fence pegs are set at the corners of the plot, between which the cord is pulled without sagging. If the distance is too large, intermediate supports can be installed. The main thing is to maintain a straight line, which will need to be checked several times visually, during the installation of poles. To do this, you can use the laser pointer, if you fix it on one column, put it on the second corner column and set the rest, focusing on the marks from the laser pointer.

Preparing holes for metal poles

The next step in the installation of poles in the country is the preparation of holes for poles. The holes can be drilled with a punch, a hand drill, an ice drill or a screw pile to a depth of 0.8 to 1.2 m, depending on the state of the soil. If possible, in order to avoid the collapse of poles, bury the poles by at least 1.2 m. However, if you have been facing fences for more than a year or you have decided to replace the old fence and know the minimum installation depth, then use it. Inadequate deepening may lead to the need to reinstall the poles and replace the entire fence as a whole.

Step 3: Install Puller On Old Post

Now you need to drill a hole in the existing post that you want to pull. How highly depends on your support material. In my case, it was about 15 inches from the ground.

Insert the puller minus the spike to the old post, aligning the holes, and push the spike through three 4 x 4 as shown.

Now you need to be your fulcrum.

What should be the distance between the posts?

If the fence is assembled from sections, then the posts should be between the sections and ensure that the sections are mounted on the ears or by welding. If the fence is without sections, on horizontal ties that are used to fasten the profiled sheet or boards, distance between racks is selected from 2 to 2.5 meters. If you choose a smaller distance, then the material consumption increases, and if a larger distance. This significantly reduces the structural rigidity of the fence and reduces the wind resistance of the entire finished structure. In order to install metal poles for the fence, select the distance in the specified range, based on the actual length of the fence line.

Step 4: Add Your Pylons

Place your fulcrum, in my case the old cinder block and step, as close to the post as possible, without covering any of the concrete that the post is on. Just take the supports to the edge of the concrete as shown.

Correct installation of fence posts

The most important and crucial step in all work is the proper installation of the pillars. Most often, metal pipes of 3 meters in length are used for high fences and poles of lower height if the fence is lower. Columns from a round pipe are not very convenient for attaching a fence and it is better to use a rectangular pipe to which you can immediately screw horizontal guides from a bar or from a rectangular pipe of smaller sizes.

To keep the fence level, it’s not enough just to hammer the pipe to a certain depth. It is better to make a hole with the Yamobur to the desired depth, fill it with concrete and lower the post into concrete. Then the pillar will stand much more reliable, it will not stagger and rust.

The walls of the finished pit fenced off from concrete with ruberoid inserttwisted in two layers. Ruberoid should reduce the bond of soil with concrete in winter, so that the soil does not push the pillar up. So that the walls do not crumble and do not reduce the height, the pits can be immediately poured with concrete and pillars. So that the pillars do not fall in fresh concrete, they are strengthened with props or four boards, knocked down at the ground level with a grill.

The position of the column can be corrected, raised or lowered deeper for an hour, until the concrete begins to set. The verticality of the column in two planes is checked using the level.

Step 5: Pull EP Post!

Take a walk at the far end of your post puller, and with one hand hold your drink of choice, use the other hand to press down on the handle lever. See how simple it is?

Step 6: Difficult to Get to the Medical

It is difficult to achieve posts that are not suitable for your new puller post, either. You can press the spike through the hole, and using the puller from the side, as shown in the figure. Worked great! He raised it directly and without prejudice to the others fence, that I had a duel when I restore her fence.
