Sooner or later in the life of every PC user, the moment comes when you have to reinstall Windows. There can be many reasons for this, for example, an outdated system, viruses that an antivirus cannot defeat, a large number of system errors that are most easily eliminated by reinstalling the OS.

Today we will step-by-step figure out how to reinstall the Windows operating system and avoid data loss.

Preparing to reinstall Windows

Windows 7 will serve as an example in this article. In principle, according to the same scheme, you can install other versions, both old and new. Before you begin reinstalling Windows, you need to take a few preparatory steps. To begin with, you must clearly understand that your actions jeopardize the safety of your data, so if you are not sure about your actions, you should ask for help from another person for these purposes.

First of all, copy information that is important to you on a USB flash drive, hard drive or any other medium. It can be photographs, music, documents, - in general, everything that is very dear to you. Be sure to check the files in the folders Documents, Downloads, on Desktop. If your hard drive is divided into two partitions, or there are two disks in the system, make sure that all important information is stored on drive D: And when installing WIndows, you need to pay attention to the size of the drive on which the system is installed so that you do not accidentally erase the second drive.

Preparing bootable media

After that, you need to prepare a bootable USB flash drive or disk. Do not follow this step if you have a system drive or other media. Personally, I use the freeware UltraISO program, with an intuitive interface, to create bootable flash drives for various purposes.

It is also important to determine which version you want to use and whether you will have problems activating the license. Windows not only differs by year of release, but also by the bitness of its operating system. Well, if you have a disk with a system from the manufacturer, otherwise you have to decide on the version of the operating system in advance. If you have installed RAM with a capacity of 4GB or higher, it makes sense to use a 64-bit system.

Reboot in BIOS

Next, you need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS. To do this, use both the DEL, F2 buttons and others provided by the manufacturer of your laptop. In it you need to select a boot device. This can be a drive, a USB device, depending on where the system image is located. If on a flash drive, then select USB (the flash drive must be inserted), save the settings and reboot the computer.

System installation process

Your computer will start to boot and run the system setup program. Everything is relatively simple here. Follow the instructions of the installer. The installation process is divided into several stages, after completing each opposite, a checkmark will appear.

Please note that during installation you will be offered a menu for selecting a disk for installing the operating system. You can either delete all existing partitions or format only section C without deleting the information from section D:

When the first step is completed, the computer will restart. At this point, you need to start the BIOS again and put a bootable hard disk or remove the media with the image. Save the settings again and restart the computer. Installation will continue.

Upon completion of all stages you will receive a clean, brand new system. All that remains is to perform basic system setup. Please note that all previously installed programs will be deleted permanently, and if you are not concerned about saving important data, there is a risk of losing them forever.

If you installed the pirated version, it is quite possible that basic drivers and a minimum set of necessary (and even harmful) programs will already be present in it. If not, you will have to look for it all yourself. It is best to download drivers from the official Microsoft sites, as well as from the sites of the manufacturers of your PC components.

How not to lose a license

Before you start, bind, if you have not already done so, your license key from Windows 10 to your Mircrosoft account. If this is not done, you may not be able to activate the system after reinstalling.

Click Start → Settings → Update and Security → Activation. If there is only the inscription "Windows system is activated using a digital license", then it is definitely not tied to a Microsoft account.

To fix this, follow the path Options → Accounts → Your details, click on "Log in instead with your Microsoft account" and follow the instructions. After completing the process, you can check your status in the "Activation" section. There should now be the inscription "The system is activated using a digital license tied to your Microsoft account."

Reinstall Windows 10 on a running computer

If you have the opportunity to boot into Windows 10, open the “Settings” tab in the “Start” menu, and then click on “Update and Security”. Then click on the “Recovery” tab and use the “Restore your computer to its original state” function. This option will give you the opportunity to choose whether or not to leave all your files and programs.

Below is a link that opens the "Windows Defender" and allows you to proceed with a clean installation.

Reinstall Windows 10 on a broken computer

If your PC is not able to start Windows 10, try the following steps.

Look at the messages that appear before the OS logo appears. Some laptops and PCs have a “hidden” hard drive where its original copy is stored. In this case, a message like “Press F10 to launch the Recovery Wizard” usually appears.

What will this lead to? There will be a complete removal of information from the hard drive, after which a hidden version of Windows will be installed on it. As a result, you will get a PC with factory settings.

Pressing the F8 key when the computer boots up will bring up the Windows boot menu, which should contain a line like “Restore the computer”.

If none of the above worked

Download the Microsoft’s Media Creation tool with which you can create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10. To do this, use a different working computer if your refuses to start. You can also save such a bootable USB flash drive in case of future malfunctions.

Start the non-functioning PC from the USB-drive, but before that make sure to create a backup copy of the data, since this process will format the entire C drive. If you have not already done so, disconnect the hard drive and connect it to another PC to copy the necessary ones to it files.

If the PC refuses to boot from the USB flash drive, enter the BIOS by pressing the Delete or F2 key, and then go to the Boot or Startup tab, where set the USB drive as the first device to start.

When the computer starts from a USB flash drive, you will see the Windows logo and a window with a choice of language. Just follow the instructions and make sure that you install the OS in the correct partition of the hard drive. If this is a completely new section, then it will be empty.

After the installation starts, your computer will restart. You will see a large round installation indicator.

Remember to check the installation process from time to time, as at one point it will ask you to disconnect the USB drive. If this is not done, the system will always reboot into installation mode.

Conclusion

The installation process of Windows 7 is very simple and intuitive, no complicated manipulations are necessary in the settings, so almost any novice computer user who can understand the basics of working in Windows will be able to handle it. Subsequent releases of Windows (8, 10) are reinstalled even easier and you can do it directly from the system interface without any installation drive! This is described here >>

Preparing and saving data

How to reinstall Windows 7? In order to protect yourself from losing important files after reinstalling the system, it is worthwhile to spend a little time and save to the flash drive or disk those documents that may be needed in the future.

For example, not everyone wants to lose the achieved result in their favorite game. It is enough to find and save one small file, which is located in the user's AppData folder. If the folder with this name does not appear, go to “Computer” - “Local disk” - “Users” - “your name” and click on “Organize” there, then select the folder and search options in the drop-down menu.

And put a marker on "Show hidden folders and files."

How to save your favorite content and links from the browser

In order to save bookmarks, before reinstalling Windows 7, you must do the following:

  • For the Mozilla Firefox browser, you will need to go to “Local Disk” - “Users” - “Username” - “Favorites” and save the entire folder.
  • To save Google Chrome data, go to "Local Disk" - "Users" - "Username" - "AppData" - "Local" - "Google" - "Chrome" and save the User Data folder.
  • For Internet Explorer, just save the “Favorites” folder located in the “Local Disk” - “Users” - “Username”.
  • When working with Opera, we go the well-known way to the AppData folder and then Opera, you only need to save the bookmarks.adr file.

To save torrent files, go to AppData, there we find the uTorrent folder and completely copy it. After reinstalling the system, the saved folder must be placed in the same place. This also applies to saved games and bookmarks in browsers.

When all the necessary data, photos and other needs have been successfully saved, we begin reinstalling the OS under the drum roll.

How to reinstall Windows 7 correctly

If there is a disk with an operating system, then insert it into the drive, after which the automatic reinstallation of the OS should begin, although in 60% of cases this does not happen. What to do in such a situation to understand how to reinstall Windows 7? "BIOS" - a mystical word, upon hearing which, many begin to get nervous. In fact, there is nothing wrong with the BIOS if you do not touch anything superfluous (and in this case, all parameters are recoverable). In order to get to the destination, you need:

  • restart the computer
  • Press the del key 2-3 times before the Windows splash screen appears. If the transition to the BIOS did not happen, just repeat the procedure again.

So, if everything is done correctly, the following image should appear before your eyes:

Next, find the First Boot Device and set the value to CD-ROM. This means that when you start the computer, it will first automatically download data from the disk. After installing the software, it is very important not to forget to return everything as it was, or the computer will always install the system (if you also forgot to remove the disk).

Press f10 to save the changes. If all the conditions have been met, the system will reinstall.

The next window prompts us to select the language, date and set the time. We set simple parameters, and boldly click "next", "install" and accept the license agreement.

  • Update (upgrade) - suitable only if the system is being reinstalled for minor reasons. If the decision was made in connection with the "death screen" or if malicious programs were clearly populated on the computer, we definitely choose the full installation.
  • Full installation (custom) - reinstalls the OS literally from scratch, mercilessly destroying everything that could harm it.

Here you have to choose which disk will appear as local, that is, the one on which the software will be installed.

Logically, the volume of the system disk should be within 35 GB, but no less. It is worth considering that many of us like to save files on the principle of "I’ll throw it on the desktop for now, so as not to forget." All documents, pictures, etc. that are located on the desktop are stored on the system drive, as well as the files from the "Downloads" folder. Thus, when calculating the volume of a local disk, you should be more generous.

Click "Next" and go for a snack, we have a minimum of 45 minutes. During installation, the computer will restart several times, which will kindly warn you. He should not interfere with this, if in the process there are no unforeseen situations, after 45-50 minutes, the new Windows 7 will be successfully installed.

The next step is the username and computer name. If at some point you need to change these settings, then this is done simply: “Start” - with the right mouse button on “Computer” - “Properties”. We find “Computer name, domain name and workgroup settings” and there we click “Change settings”.

You do not need to set a password, so you can skip this item by clicking Next.

You will also need to enter a product key. You can find it on the bottom of the laptop or on a special sticker on the system unit (if you purchased the equipment with a licensed disc).

If the software was installed from another disk, then the key must be indicated on the box. Well, if the system was installed illegally, you can skip this point and forget about this issue for about a month. After 30 days, a beautiful picture on your desktop will change to a black screen, and some functions and devices may turn off. If this does not bother you, then you can safely work with the system further or be puzzled by finding a suitable key in the Internet.

When choosing the type of update installation, it is best to use the recommended options. If the system does not automatically update, then sooner or later minor problems may arise in working with the most frequently used programs. The update eliminates minor flaws and optimizes the OS.

Reinstalling the system using a flash drive

To get started, download the OS image to the computer. After that, install the Ultra Iso program or you can use Daemon Tools, the algorithm is approximately the same.

Next, we take a USB flash drive or memory card, it’s worth noting right away that the BIOS will not see any of the drives installed through the USB-3 connector, so be careful and use USB-2. Externally, the connectors do not differ, in some devices USB-3 is marked in blue. If there is no identification mark, then everything is simple. We find in any search engine information about the characteristics of a laptop or computer and further - information about which side the connectors we need are installed.

In order to prepare a flash drive for further work, it must be formatted, even if there is nothing on it. Then we perform the following actions:

  • In UltraIso, we open the Windows 7 image that we have already downloaded (“File” - “Open” - select the program image).
  • We find "Self-upload" in the top menu and select "Burn Hard Disk Image".
  • In the window that opens, indicate the formatted USB flash drive.
  • We confirm the verification, and set the recording method to USB-HDD +.
  • Click "Write."
  • We agree with the fact that all files will be erased from the USB flash drive (although we formatted it, we still set it to “Yes”).
  • Voila! If we see “Recording is completed,” then it’s done, and you can begin the reinstallation.
  • We go to the BIOS in the known way described above, and in the First Boot Device select the recorded USB flash drive.

Reinstall Windows 7 using a DVD burned image

Another way will tell you how to reinstall Windows 7 via CD-ROM without a license disk.

Why DVD? Everything is elementary, a regular CD-ROM will not work for the only simple reason - there is not enough volume, and the OS image "weighs" about 3 GB.

If for these purposes you decide to use a DVD-ROM, on which there is already something, then, as in the situation with a flash drive, you must resort to formatting.

Now open the well-known UltraIso program, go to “File” - “Open” and find the downloaded image of “Windows”.

Next, go to the “Tools” menu and click on “Burn CD Image”, in the window that appears, check “Check”, dutifully agree with the fact that everything on the disk will be destroyed and click on “Burn”.

That's all, after the message “Recording completed” appears, our disk is ready. We think everyone has already guessed what to do next. That's right: go to the BIOS and select the recorded disc as First Boot Device.

How to return from Windows 7 to XP

Sometimes it’s difficult for users to master a new system, so for some it’s easier to reinstall Windows 7 on XP. The installation procedure is not much different from that described previously, with the exception of a few points:

  1. After proceeding to the installation, the system prompts you to choose which partition (that is, which drive) the OS will be installed on. In order to root out the previously installed Windows 7, you need to select the appropriate section. After that, there will be a choice of 4 formatting options, the only correct one of which is “Format Partition in NTFS”. After that, the computer usually reboots and starts installing the system.

Legacy Support.

After that, save the changes and proceed to boot from disk or from other media. The type of installation when changing Windows 8 to 7 can only be “New Installation”, since the OS is different, there is no need to talk about any updates.

It is also necessary to delete all sections, including hidden ones. After that, no longer thinking about how to reinstall the Windows 7 computer, we do the rest:

  • specify the time, date and keyboard layout,
  • We agree to the terms and conditions, specify the username and computer name,
  • enter the key, etc.

After installation (drivers)

As a rule, reinstalling Windows 7 on a laptop or computer is quite easy, but after the process of replacing the OS, many users have a number of questions. For example:

  • “Why did the quality of the image deteriorate after installing the new system?”
  • "Why does not the computer or laptop see the flash drive?"
  • “Why did the sound get worse?” Etc.

All this happens most often when reinstallation was carried out by downloading the OS or buying a disk from your hands (you don’t have to think about how to reinstall the Windows 7 computer, but some “jambs” still pop up). In order to solve a number of such problems, just download the drivers from the official website of the manufacturer. Or pay attention to the drivers before reinstalling the system.

Let's take an example. Suppose, before reinstalling Asus Windows 7, the user was not puzzled by the question of saving data from his laptop, or he simply did not have the opportunity to do this. How to be?

It's simple, just type in the search engine model (enough and the manufacturer’s company) of the device and add the coveted phrase "Download drivers from the official site." Then go to the manufacturer’s website link and there, in the appropriate form, indicate the full model of the laptop. Next, you will have to download all the drivers presented in turn and install them on a laptop one by one. There are no tricks to install, since the drivers themselves install themselves where they should.

If, for one reason or another, the drivers go wild and are installed in the wrong place, you can go to the device manager and force them to be updated.

In order to get into the remote control, you can simply type “Device Manager” in the search bar that pops up when you click “Start”. Next, right-click on the driver that is marked with an exclamation mark. And we select "Update drivers", in a new window it remains only to indicate that the required files must be searched on the computer itself and indicate the place where they were installed.

If all drivers are installed normally in the device manager, the image will improve and the screen resolution will increase to the required level.

Finally

A computer can “fly” at any time, so you should consider organizing a backup storage of high-value files before reinstalling Windows 7. Thus, you can save a lot of time after installing the system, because it is possible that even the most basic programs ( Word, etc.) will have to re-search and install.

Reinstalling Windows 7 on a laptop or computer is not difficult, even a novice user can cope with this task. The main thing is to approach the issue responsibly and spend an hour to save all the useful information from the computer before reinstalling the OS.
