How to starch fabric

Natural remedies are especially recommended for families with young children and allergies. But everything must be approached wisely: it is better to buy a factory-made organic laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent than to experiment on your clothes and wash the pans with soda for hours. But in other areas of the household, it is quite possible to do with improvised means.

Remember the main assistants in the house:

  • Salt cleans and disinfects.
  • Soda cleans, disinfects, removes odors.
  • Fresh lemon Refreshes, cleanses, removes stains and degreases.
  • Essential oils lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus and citrus fruits refresh and disinfect.
  • Vinegar degreases surfaces, dissolves mineral deposits, kills fungi and mold, destroys up to 99% of bacteria.

The insect spray will replace the natural repellent - citronella essential oil (you can buy it at the pharmacy). This bright pleasant aroma, similar to citrus fruits, effectively scares off almost all insects. Citronella will help eliminate harsh kitchen odors and even get rid of tobacco smoke. Using oil is simple: add 3-5 drops per aroma lamp based on every 15 square meters of the room.

Fabric softener

Homemade softener is recommended for people with sensitive skin. The recipe is simple and almost free: 1 cup of drinking soda, 1 and 1/4 cup of warm water, 8 cups of 9% vinegar and your favorite essential oils.

Combine vinegar and water, and then stir in and add soda. Wait until the end of the reaction (and it can be stormy, so take the dishes higher for cooking) and pour the finished mixture into the bottle. Add 1/3 teaspoon of any essential oil to your taste. Shake the mixture before each use and add 1/2 to 1 cup when washing at the beginning of the rinse cycle.

Spray for smoothing creases on clothes

A wrinkle smoothing spray will help you out if your clothes are wrinkled slightly in a closet or suitcase. This is an indispensable tool for travelers and housewives. Instead of a factory spray, you can make a home-made analogue from improvised components: pour and mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup water and 3 tablespoons of liquid fabric conditioner in a spray bottle. Hang the clothes on a hanger and spray the liquid at a distance of 20 cm to make the fabric slightly damp. Then straighten the folds and let the clothes dry.

Tip. You can make a starch spray yourself. To do this, you will need corn starch and distilled water (1 tbsp. Starch per 1 tbsp. Water), as well as a spray bottle. Shake the bottle vigorously before each use.

This is the traditional way of starches. First you need to determine the optimal concentration of starch, depending on the type of your tissue.

For things made of light fabrics, for example, cambric, muslin, chiffon, a soft method is used to starch baby clothes. Proportions: in 1 liter of water, a teaspoon of starch powder is diluted.

For starching shirts, napkins, tablecloths, the concentration is increased to medium: a tablespoon full of starch per liter of water.

For cuffs, fluffy petticoats, collars use the maximum concentration - you need to dilute in a liter 2-3 tablespoons of starch powder.

Starch solution recipe: Starch is poured into a container, poured with a small amount of cool water, stirred until completely homogeneous so that there are no lumps. Then slowly, in a thin stream, pour into boiling water, stirring constantly. Ready solution should be transparent. If the mixture turned cloudy, it needs to be boiled for some more time.

If the material you are going to starch is colored or with a pattern, the solution should have a temperature not higher than room temperature - otherwise the product will fade.
In order to make it easier to iron after starching things, ordinary milk is added to the starch solution - 2 teaspoons per 1 liter of water. For white things, there is also a little trick: a drop of blue added to starch will return its former whiteness.

What things can not be starch?

  • underwear, because starch makes things practically airtight and non-hygroscopic. Doctors go a little further and recommend that you never starch bedding.
  • things of dark shades, otherwise whitish starch stains will ruin them.
  • synthetic fiber things

If your material is on the “forbidden” list, but it still needs to be stiffened, there are several ways that will help you achieve your goal, but you can't call them sparing.

Cook sugar syrup, remembering to stir constantly. Dip the product into the syrup, let it lie down a little, then squeeze it and give it the desired shape. If water gets in, the effect will disappear.

Soak one tablespoon of gelatin in cold water. After swelling, bring the volume of water to 200-250 grams and heat. When the gelatin has completely dissolved, the solution is ready for use.
