In the explanatory dictionary of Ozhegov it is said that the frog, in contrast to the toad, has long hind legs specially adapted for jumping, and the toad has skin with warts. In fact, not so simple. Biology knows much more differences.
Frog - amphibian (amphibian) order Anura, whose name from Greek can be translated as "tailless". Science knows more than five thousand species of frogs, many of them are endangered.
Frogs are able to breathe skin, so it always retains moisture. They are smooth and slippery to the touch, with elongated legs with membranes and a short body. These amphibians move on land in large leaps.
The frog roe looks like lumps of mucus that float on the surfaces of water bodies. From this caviar tadpoles are born that live only under water. Only when the frog grows limbs, and becomes a reduced copy of an adult, does it begin to go ashore. Frogs lay a large number of eggs, some species - up to twenty thousand.
A toad is usually a larger tailless animal from the amphibian class. To date, more than 250 varieties are known, some reach a length of 20 centimeters.
Toads have a dense physique, shorter proportionally limbs than a frog, and thick, tuberous skin with poisonous glands dispersed over it. Behind the eyes are large glands - mumps. They produce a toxic substance that is not harmful to humans.
Toad eggs are laid in the form of long cords lying on the bottom or braiding plant stems. Their tadpoles, as a rule, also live near the bottom. During the year, the toad lays from 4 to 12 thousand eggs. Moreover, in a number of species, males perform a key function in preparing eggs for hatching.
Some toads live in a temperate climate, some in a tropical climate. The former, as a rule, have olive or brown skin color, the latter are usually brighter.
It is also worth noting that they spend more time in water than on land, toads - on the contrary, they need water only for reproduction. Still toads have no teeth, and many frogs have them.
If you look closely and know the characteristic signs, it is easy to distinguish between two amphibians.
- The toad's body is flat, large. The frog has less, and the legs are longer.
- The toad head is lowered, there are large glands on it that secrete a secret with poison. At the frog, it is raised, the eyes are more pronounced.
- Toad is lighter. The frog is marsh, greenish in color.
These amphibians live in different places. The frog loves water. The toad prefers dry land, but on it - raw grass, leaves, ground.
When the frog's tadpole grows, it remains near its swamp or pond. Toads, when they go to land, love to settle in gardens, kitchen gardens, on a damp surface under bushes. And they return to the water when the period of laying eggs comes.
Amphibians breed in water. In the toad, the eggs are much smaller, since the reproductive function is weaker, and it is connected by cords, which can reach eight meters. Eggs lie at the bottom, braiding algae. Tadpoles prefer to stay at the bottom, and after metamorphosis they go to land. In one year, the toad is able to replenish the population by 10-12 thousand individuals.
The frog lays about 20 thousand eggs per year. They float freely along the surface of the water in the form of clots. Tadpoles live in water, and small frogs can be selected on land.
The main difference between these amphibians is how they breed. But appearance and habitat are also different.
